Baby Toys

It’s Time for Baby Toys!

Toys! Baby toys bring all the fun home to your ever growing and exploring little one. Soon an overabundance of baby toys will be taking over your house; we used to joke that they quite possibly reproduced in the closets at night! The most frequent question we hear from first time parents focuses on how to select the most age appropriate, safe toys that babies will love playing with day after day.

Keep safety at the forefront, making sure that any toy you select for a baby passes a choke test. You can do this simply at home by making sure toys and potentially removable parts of larger toys cannot fit within a toilet paper tube. This helps ensure your “mouthy” infant or toddler will not be able to swallow or choke on a baby toy during playtime.

The youngest of babies, between zero and three months, need high-contrast toys that they can observe from your lap, a crib or baby seat. For example, dangling mobiles, crib accessories and activity centers are developmental appropriate by providing contrasting, moving visual stimulation.

Infants between four and six-months-old love soft rubber or plush toys they can start to practice their grip on. However, avoid hard items that could accidentally cause a self-inflicted injury. Soft plush toys, such as our Tinkle Crinkle Rattle Squeak Activity Toy is perfect with sound effects and a variety of textures for little fingers to explore. Larger activity centers are still a great choice at this age, especially ones that grow with baby, as most provide enticing objects to bat at and interesting music to hear.

At six-months of age, most babies are starting to sit up and can control their movements with greater accuracy. This is a good time to start introducing more advanced baby toys that demonstrate cause and effect – buttons that make noise when banged, simple cars that roll away when pushed, or building blocks that stack and can be knocked down (trust me, baby will never tire of this game)!

If you are selecting a gift and are unsure what sorts of “bell and whistles” should be included, go the tried and true route with a traditional Teddy Bear that can be played with and displayed as a cherished keepsake on a rocking chair or toy box lid. With a history of being a favorite toy since the turn of the 20th century, the iconic Teddy Bear was named after Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States!

Other thoughtful baby toys to give your own child or purchase as a shower or birthday gift included sturdy board books with simple stories, bold graphics and even interactive elements. Create a reading nook in a quiet corner where you can share stories with your little one from a rocking chair or comfy floor pillows. A great bookcase that complements your child’s room keeps order to a growing library of beloved storybooks.
